Dr. Jo. R Carby-Hall of Hull University, Professor at Nicolaous Copernicus University, Torun, Poland and Jean Monnet Professor at Lodz University Poland, are directing and coordinating a European inter-university research programme into the approximation of Poland's laws in preparation for Poland's future membership of the European Union. My contribution to the research of this team is in the area of environmental policy, laws and standards. European Community law and policy regarding the protection of air against pollution is the chosen focus to illustrate the practical realities inherent in the approximation of laws in the area of the environment.
