In 2007, the European Commission has issued an ‘Airport Package’ announcing a wide range of airport-related legislative initiatives. This article outlines recent legislative and regulatory activity based on the Airport Package. The first part of the article focuses on initiatives related to airport capacity problems. It offers an overview of recent efforts to improve the use of existing capacity and discusses the issue of new airport infrastructure as well. In a second part, the recently approved Directive on Airport Charges (ACD) is critically discussed. By way of conclusion, the author points to some of the important challenges awaiting the European legislator.
