The following lecture was presented by Lord Holford,
past President R.I.B.A., as the 1966 Maitland Lecture of the Institution of Structural
Engineers. It is felt that members would like this opportunity of reading the
Lecture, both on account of the widespread applications of arbitration to
building matters and also because of its general interest. The Lecture is reproduced
by kind permission of the Council of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
