The Rent Act, 1965, was
passed on 8th November, 1965. With
the exception of Part II, it came into operation on 8th December, 1965. Part II (which deals with the registration
of rents] comes into operation on such date as the Minister may by order appoint,
and different days may be so appointed for different registration areas and, in
England and Wales, for different parts of a registration area.
The Act gives
security of tenure to the tenants of all residential properties having a
rateable value of up to £400 in London and £200 elsewhere, and prohibits eviction without a
Court order from such premises of any value, including service tenancies and
agricultural tied cottages, though in certain circumstances the Court is bound
to make an order.
