This article summarises the results of research carried out into the factors influencing the choice and effectiveness of dispute resolution methods adopted by Chinese manufacturers of apparel for export who are in dispute with US importers. Face to face negotiation and mediation are favoured methods and a surprising finding is that the adoption of arbitration clauses in sales contracts in such cases is only a recent phenomenon.
