This article discusses the effects of social, psychological and practical factors on computer-mediated communication in ADR. It focuses on how the presence of technology can distort the way in which people create and maintain relationships, their ability to communicate clearly and the effect such distortion in turn has on the exercise of ADR practitioners’ skills and their willingness (or otherwise) to use computer technology in ADR. The article is an edited version of a paper given at the 8th Australian National Mediation Conference in Hobart, Tasmania, held on 2-5 May 2006.
