This article considers the reasons for the existence and use of religious tribunals as ADR mechanisms in modern times. In so doing, it addresses the procedural rules of arbitration under three religious traditions - Russian Orthodoxy, Shari’ah Islam and Israeli rabbinical law - and asks whether, and to what extent, those rules reflect rules of arbitration in the secular world.
