This article discusses the phenomenon of ‘post-settlement blues’ occasionally experienced by parties after reaching a mediated settlement agreement, the feelings that give rise to this and the steps that are open to mediators in order to address those feelings, to preserve the integrity of the agreement and to foreclose resort to litigation. In addressing this phenomenon at the request of parties, mediators must always take care to draw a balance between party autonomy, finality and emotional support.
