Interim measures play an essential role in the resolution of cross-border disputes, particularly when there is a pressing need for some form of protection pending the consideration of the main dispute and the issue of a final award. Historically, a party wishing to obtain interim relief in arbitration had either to apply to the arbitral tribunal or to a national court, but if the arbitral tribunal had not yet been constituted, a national court was the only available forum. This article reviews the emergency arbitration practice and procedure under the Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) (7th Edition, 1 January 2025).
