This article will illustrate the legal options and protections available in sporting disputes under the European system, by reference to the case of Claudia Pechstein, (a speed skater aiming for the Olympics and accused of doping violations) against the International Skating Union. The article provides an overview of the legal framework governing all Olympic speed skater athletes and the bodies in charge of implementing the rules and regulations. It then studies Pechstein’s position, the processes available to her, and the path she had to take as she negotiated the slippery curves of the rinks of the Court Arbitration for Sport, the Swiss Federal Tribunal, German national courts, and European Human Rights courts.
