During the
last twenty to twenty-five years there has been a virtual explosion of
investment treaty arbitrations. At the beginning of this development,
investment arbitration was still regarded as an extraordinary measure. Today
investment arbitration is an everyday occurrence. The widespread and increasing
use of investment arbitration has generated a need to educate and train lawyers
to work in this field. At Uppsala University this has been done on the basis of
the problem based learning method. As the name indicates it is a teaching and
learning method which focuses on problems and how to solve them. Participants
in the Masters Course in Investment Treaty Arbitration at Uppsala University
come from all over the globe. For some of them the problem based learning
method was initially a challenge. In the end, however, they realized the value
of this method.
