Flexible working has become a vital element of workplace organisation both in the UK and throughout Europe. UK legislation provides that qualifying employees have a right to request flexible working arrangements, which forms one element of a raft of laws which have been introduced to improve the work-life balance within recent years. This article, based on research undertaken on SMEs in the West Midlands, examines whether there are benefits to flexible working arrangements and queries whether legislation is really necessary to implement this and whether the current legislation should be extended.
