Within the ambit of the “Protection of minority shareholders in Cyprus company law and capital markets law: an EU and comparative analysis” (ProMiSh) research project, funded by the Leventis Foundation and hosted by the University of Cyprus, an international conference was held by the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus on October 15th, 2025, befittingly titled “Revisiting the protection of minority shareholders in company law: EU, comparative and national perspectives’, bringing together experts from EU Member States in its effort to investigate minority shareholder protection in the EU, cutting across traditional boundaries between Company Law, Capital Markets Law and EU Law. The presentations at the conference, reflecting diverse jurisprudential and methodological perspectives, were of the uppermost quality. As illustrated in this report, this international conference filled an important gap in the research of European company and capital markets law, communicating the national experiences from the examined countries, from the purview of shareholder protection; and provided a deeper understanding of the network of rights and remedies comprising the respective legal framework. The papers presented and the discussion that followed highlighted the interaction between rules from different areas of law, identifying at the same time the existing gaps and problems and also demonstrated the prospects of reform at the national and the EU levels; they further provided insight regarding the direction that shareholder protection should take.
