This article seeks to act as a refresher on non-preferential rules of origin in EU customs law. The authors first place non-preferential origin in its broader customs context, and then review the substantive rules governing the acquisition of origin. This article then reviews the new anti-avoidance rules introduced by the Commission when the Union Customs Code was adopted, and explain why, in their view, those new rules are invalid.
