In recent years, it has been the practice to encourage small enterprises and the self-employed by providing them with practical and financial support. Concomitantly, large enterprises have been relinquishing many of their functions and transferring them to various types of subcontractors, particularly small enterprises and the self-employed. The investigation carried out within the framework of this study examines a number of prevalent myths concerning small enterprises and the self-employed in the Israeli industrial sector. The findings indicate that, contrary to popular belief, medium and large size enterprises function better than small ones. Accordingly, in Israel at least, the desirability of flexibility in the form of small enterprises is questionable.
