Employment arrangements do not stand still. The relationship between employer and employee constantly evolves and the law changes in response. So rapid is social and technological change that it is not always an easy matter today to decide whether a given work arrangement is an employment contract or not and, if it is, to define the rights and obligations. One response has been the legislative introduction of basic employment rights and the provision of specialist industrial tribunals for these rights to be swiftly and inexpensively enforced. These responses are found in societies as different as The Peoples Republic of China and the United Kingdom and they demonstrate that the central questions in the employment relationship remain the same all over the world but that the context alters according to a range of pressures.
