On 23 June 2013 South Africa denounced the BIT it has in force with Spain since 1999. The denunciation will enter into force on 23 December 2013. The BIT will still be applicable to investments made before the latter date for a further ten years. The decision has been taken unilaterally by South Africa in order to implement new policies on foreign investment.
