Awards are in essence a decision. Decisions flow from ( factual and legal) analysis of the record. Conceptual and empirical constructs are involved. Wisdom is at play. Decisions vary not only in their accuracy, but in their quality. Their wisdom. In this essay, insights are shared as to what makes for an accurate and a wise decision a quality decision. The idea proposed is that reaching proper decisions involves coming to grips as to how our brain (and its proceses) works. Cognitive traps and biases are signalled out. Steps to tackle them identified. The goal: ‘decision hygiene’: arbitrators should strive to have it; advocates are well advised to choose arbitrators alive to the concept.
