This paper examines the major criticisms of arbitration concerning speed and cost and suggests ways in which the arbitral process can be improved so as to achieve more efficiency and speed and reduce the costs of the process. Among the various proposals, the paper addresses in detail the use of short summaries of the parties’ cases, early openings, closing submissions, the use of expert and the tribunal’s powers in relation to costs.
