In a competitive global world, a short delivery time is of utmost value. Looking from the importing country’s administrative perspective, the time taken from the arrival of cargo into ports/ airports to being cleared by customs authorities is of key importance in the overall delivery time. This article analyses the dwell time (DT) performance of cargo imported into India and consists of two groups: sea cargo and air cargo. Evaluation of the current performance in comparison with goals set in the National Trade Facilitation Action Plan (NTFAP) of India 2017–2020, under World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement on Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) is conducted. To give out recommendations for reduction in DT, the channel of clearance and location of the custom site is studied independently and in combination.
